New Delhi: With the ample availability of Indian Railways trains to most of the domestic destinations of India, trains have been highly preferred for travel during summer vacations due to affordable ticket prices and facility of concession under different quotas. The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) offers concessions on train ticket fares for senior citizens, disabled, students, unemployed youth, doctors, media persons, athletes, war widows and for several other categories.
Senior citizens, both male and female, are eligible for concession of up to 50 per cent of the train ticket fare. According to the prescribed guidelines by the Indian Railways, all the males with age of 60 years or more and all the females with age of 58 years or more are qualified as senior citizens. All the senior citizens falling in the aforementioned criteria can avail concession on train ticket fares of all the classes of Mail, Express, Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Jan Shatabdi, Duronto trains.
The concession facility on train ticket bookings can be availed through the IRCTC e-ticketing website, www.irctc.co.in, and from Indian Railways ticket booking counters, reservation offices. Male senior citizens are allowed for a maximum concession of 40 per cent and female senior citizens are eligible for a maximum concession of 50 per cent.
To avail concession on train tickets, a senior citizen or the person booking the train ticket is required to fill in the correct age according to the government-issued ID card and have to select “Avail Concession” option under “Option for Senior Citizen Concession” section of passenger details form.
All the senior citizens who have availed concessions on train tickets are mandatorily required to carry proof of age during their train journey. The senior citizens eligible for senior citizens concession on train tickets who didn’t want to avail the discounted fares may opt out of the concession partially or completely.
